Andrew Mitchell ended his first stint as an MP as a social security minister, having also served as a whip. The son of former Conservative MP David Mitchell, he was tipped to become a Tory chief whip had he not lost his seat. In November 2003, he returned to the frontbench as a junior shadow economic affairs minister. And he became a shadow minister for homeland security in September 2004. Mr Mitchell has been a keen supporter of the principles of Thatcherite Conservatism, as well as backing the return of capital punishment.
